As a mother, it’s a treat to be able to show my children the Disney movies that captivated me as a child. The Little Mermaid has always been one of my favorites, so I was excited to introduce it to my daughter, when it was re-released a couple of years ago to DVD.
On August 26th, Walt Disney Home Entertainment released The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning, and I was thrilled to be able to share the prequel with my daughter, since we are both huge fans of Ariel.
Jodi Benson as Ariel and Samuel E. Wright as Sebastian, reprise their famous roles and put on an incredible show as they help to tell the story of a time when music was banned from the underwater kingdom of Atlantica. We watch as Ariel, torn between family duty and her love of music, makes a difficult choice in hopes of restoring music, friendship and love to the kingdom.
Since a Disney movie isn’t complete without a villain, Sally Field joins the stellar cast as the voice of Marina Del Rey, the evil governess for King Triton’s daughters.
I enjoyed watching the beginning portions of the movie, where we get to see Ariel, already a daddy’s girl, as a young tot. As a mom, I was also touched while watching Ariel’s mother as she lovingly sang to her daughters.
The animation is definitely up there with the original film. The musical numbers are also fun, but don’t compare to those we instantly fell in love with in the original Disney classic. For a straight to DVD movie, however, The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning is superb.
In stores, the movie retails for $29.99, and I do feel it is worth every cent.

I think my daughter Damaris may be one of the biggest fans of Ariel there can be. She’s 8 now, but as a toddler and preschooler, she would tell people that when she grows up, she was going to be a mermaid like Ariel but she was going to sell AVON like her Mommy (me) does. LOL! She would love this DVD.
My son and I just watched The Little Mermaid this afternoon together. He’s just getting to the age where he loves animated movies and will sit and watch one the whole way through. Of course, I have that movie on VHS and need to upgrade it too.

The Little Mermaid was my daughter’s all-time favorite movie growing up. We had the video, the read-along cassette tape, and scads of Ariel dolls and toys. We even threw an Ariel birthday party when she was four, complete with a “Flounder” cake! Hard to believe that she’s all grown up now and expecting a little one of her own in September.
