Post partum hit me hard as well. What a great article Holly!

My kids are older now, but boy, did I ever put a guilt trip on myself when my babies were fussy and crying. As first time parents we didn't know to check things out if they didn't seem right. She cried all day, never a break at all and it didn't fit colic characteristics. With further research on the Internet I found her symptoms mirrored silent gastric reflux. We had to be persistent as our doctor wanted to wait until she was 3 months old to explore reflux as colic is said to diminish often at that stage. Our marriage, lives, and even basic hygiene were put on hold while our little one screamed constantly. Horrible. Please look further if you feel it's more than colic. Your doctor is a great starting point, but the Internet can sometimes give further information. I found many exhausted and frustrated reflux mommies that were helpful and comforting to me.We tried it all, and unfortunately had to use medication to control her reflux. It was a miracle when the medication kicked in a few weeks later--we felt someone traded our baby for a new one! Hang in there, it can be a rough ride. Our now 16 month old is the happiest toddler I've ever met, so colic/reflux babies don't stay surly forever! She is also medication-free. It was tough thinking she would be on medication, but our sanity was fraying. It was the best decision we ever made. Here are some things that helped a bit, but overall, medication was the cure for her. I suspect if she had colic they would have worked wonders. Baby's Bliss Gripe Water, Hyland's Colic Tablets, acidophilus, keep upright at all times and put head of crib on an incline, no jostling as it can cause a reflux flare-up, don't feed too much at once--more frequent but small feedings, hold upright when feeding, give lots of physical touch, pacifier helps soothe (sucking action hinders refluxing), and talk to your doctor about using medication and seeing a pediatric gastroenterologist if necessary. We had to go this route, and it changed our lives. Hang in there colic and reflux mommies, it gets better!

We were told repeatedly my daughter had colic and just to wait it out. It was really bad, and we had no help. Gas medicine seemed to work better than anything else, though he still had major screaming fits.

Same here, I wish I would have known more when my son was an infant.
