Well Janice is now home, but she is definitely not in tackling form…
She returned home from her trip exhausted, drowning in dirty laundry and countless emails behind. ‘Overwhelmed’ hardly even does her mood justice. Alas, we’re left to tackle again on our own.
As you can see, much of my last week was spent working with our web designer to revamp “5 Minutes for Mom”. And I’m not yet done. Our patient artist has skillfully completed her tasks, but I still have some loose ends to clean up.
I still have to:
- Fix some navigation issues and add a few more page links. We still need to add more links to our feature columns section and other pages.
- I want to try to hyper link the words in the header “Win A Contest”, “Make Blogging Friends” and “Promote Your Site”. This would be a image map in html, but this template uses css, so I have to figure out if I can make it work. I may not be able to… but I need to try more. (I’ll likely enlist hubby to help on this one.)
- Research more spam guard solutions. We are being bombarded with thousands of spam and although we’re using Akisimet and HashCash, the spam is still getting through by the hundreds.
- Update our Special Discounts page and figure out where to put a link to it in our new design. (It’s so hard to find places to link to everything without making the site cluttered and overwhelming.)
- Fix a bug in our layout where the sidebars are not displaying properly in IE 6. (Again, I’ll likely enlist hubby to help on this one.)
- Put our blogroll back on the site. We’ve had a tough time trying to decide what to do with the blog links that used to be in our sidebar… and we think we’re going to add a separate page for those blogroll links. It’s tough because there are so many hundreds of blogs that we want to list front and center on our homepage but there just isn’t enough room.
Instead we want to focus more attention on Our Readers’ Blogs to try to promote all blogs equally. The list that was on our previous home page are of some sites that we exchanged links with a long time ago as well as some of the bloggers that we read most often.
So we think the best thing is to add them to a separate page… which is something I still need to do.
- Oh no… I just noticed that our Mr Linky isn’t working now in this new upgrade. Sigh… I’ll try to fix that now.
UPDATE — Okay I just went to Mr Linky and got the new code from the Widget Wizard. The wizard was really cool and easy… and it even had an option to select “Tackle It Tuesday” as the meme. Pretty cool… even Mr Linky knows about our little meme.
So I guess we’ll see if I’ve implemented this new Mr Linky correctly. Please let us know if you have any issues with it.
All of this is not even to mention the work of responding to the hundreds of emails requesting site listings that are flagged and waiting for me to respond.
We’ve actually now been slowed down even further with adding listings to our directories.
For the last few months, we’ve been extremely backlogged with more listing submissions than we can keep up with… but we were slowing working through the backlog. But then… unfortunately, this week as a necessary step to improve the performance of our site, we had to upgrade to PHP 5 and Wordpress 2.2.1. The upgrade broke our current script that helped automate some of the steps to publish the listings.
Our new updated program which will work with the new versions and will offer the ability for folks to update their published listings won’t be ready for another couple weeks. (My husband is programming it for us and he only gets a couple hours in the evenings to work on it… and it is a huge job.)
So, today I sent an email out to all the people who’ve submitted their listing, but are still waiting to be published. Now I still need to email all the hundreds of folks who have requested a site listing and haven’t yet heard anything from us. The real drag of it is that I will need to email them and tell them I’ll have to get back to them once the program is ready… so it doesn’t really even move me ahead. sigh.
Anyway… those are a few of the things I need to do on the site in the next week.
What about you… what pile of work are your plowing through?

We started a site revamp earlier today - trying to go to 3 column - and well, it ended badly, lol. We’re back to the old site and working out the kinks elsewhere:(

Wow…I’m overwhelmed after reading your list. Maybe I should come over and help you tackle today! You must be so utterly exhausted. Hope you make lots of progress…remember forward motion is good even if you don’t get it all done.
My tackle is a little different this week…all about forward motion.

I’m not an official Tackle it Tuesday person, but saw this on someone else’s site and wandered over.
I did tackle the playroom this past weekend, and created a scrapping area for my dd and me.
Here is the before shot (someone asked for a before picture, I didn’t even think to post it!)

Wow, I love the new look! So cute and mod! My tackle is a little old and a little new! I have been tackling a new shop for a couple of weeks now (the old) and need to implement a re-worked schedule (the new). Oh, and it’s my anniversary and with 6 kiddos it caught me completely off guard - eek!
Blessings All!

#30 - Sara @ 5:34 pm
Well, it’s 4:30 and the day’s almost over, or maybe it’s just beginning, I guess it depends on how you look at it, either way I finally did tackle something maybe a little bit noteworthy. Noteworthiness depends on whether dh notices the clean shower or not!
#31 - Lisa @ 6:22 pm
Well, my tackle was small in comparsion but glad it’s done just the same. Happy Tuesday!
#32 - Dani @ 7:40 pm
Found this site on the Blogger’s Choice Awards website. Good luck in the Best Parenting Blog category and all the others! I can’t wait to see what happens with Tackle it Tuesday, I definitely felt like I tackled this Tuesday to death (let’s just say I started the day with two hours of overdue dental work). Great to find the site, you should totally add a Brag Badge code so more people vote for this site and it’s easier to find for people like me
I’ll check in next Tuesday!

Hi, Well one room down, 5 million more piles of stuff to go!
